Here at Linwright Design, we spend a lot of ‘educational’ time following SEOMoz and Rand Fishkin, who always has his finger on the pulse of what’s going on in SEO and goes strictly White Hat with all of his SEO techniques. He recently wrote an article about why Black Hat SEO works, for a short while, and why it’s so frustrating for SEO’s with integrity. Here’s what he had to say:

I hate webspam. I hate what it’s done to the reputation of hardworking, honest, smart web marketers who help websites earn search traffic. I hate how it’s poisoned the acronym SEO; a title I’m proud to wear. I hate that it makes legitimate marketing tactics less fruitful. And I hate, perhaps most of all, when it works.

Black Hat SEO

Many so called SEO Consultants and SEO Experts either fail to understand the consequences of Black Hat SEO, or they just don’t care. The reason that Black Hat SEO is so popular is because it does work and it makes any SEO look like a genius.

These tactics are easy, they aren’t very time consuming, which makes them affordable. What is bad about that, right? Every Arizona business, big and small, wants to save money while making money. Hence these SEO tactics look like that infamous Golden Ticket. That ticket straight to the top.

The single most frustrating thing for an SEO with integrity is to see is another SEO sell a Black Hat package right under a client’s nose. The frustration is not so much from a business standpoint, although these kinds of SEO’s make us all look bad, it’s from a humanity standpoint. Honestly, how do these people sleep at night knowing that they’re damaging this client’s online brand for months, perhaps years to come?

I often see bloggers and hear small business owners refer to SEO’s as used car salesmen that can’t be trusted. Well, they’re right, as much as I hate to say it. When you buy a car, you prepare yourself for the backlash of used car salesmen, the onslaught of ‘deals’ and ‘rewards’ for buying a certain car. However, if you go into that dealership prepared, you will probably get a better deal than you expected. The same goes for SEO. If you know a little about how to protect yourself and your business, you’ll get an SEO with integrity and not another used car salesman.
